Flat Life

Y6 have been working on a transition unit about FlatLife. It is about different people living and getting on with each other. We made our own flats using shoe boxes - we made furniture - chairs, tables, beds. We also made characters for our flats - using clay.

We worked on our design and technology skills - realised the importance of measuring accurately because some of us ended up with lopsided tables!

We also had to saw the wood - Assven was very good at this.

These are some of our flats:

Kristy's Flat was a bedroom.

Leah's was an ordinary bedroom.

Genesis's was a dining room, she made a table with plates with food on them.

Important up-date re: Wat Tyler Residential

As you know the Y6 residential this year, to Wat Tyler Country Park, was offered to both classes as 2 seperate visits. We hoped that as many children as possible would come and that we would be able to fill all the places offered. However, we sadly find now, that only half the anticipated uptake for places has happened.

Having received the figures and potential unacceptable increase in cost to each child, we have no choice but to combine both class trips into one. The date for the now one residential visit to Wat Tyler Country Park is Monday 20th June 2011 - Wednesday 22nd June 2011.

Every experience and planned activity will remain exactly the same as well as hopefully, the enjoyment and fun factor.

Visit to the Drama Department -Hainault High School

Recently, the Year 6 classes visited the drama department, in Hainault High School.
They were divided into two groups; one using the main hall and the other using the drama studio. Led by two teachers, they were introduced to the game 'Whoosh' which required them to step in and out of character, based around the story of Perseus and Medusa. They then rehearsed and performed parts of this story to an audience. The children learnt skills of voice projection, stage direction and corpsing. The children had a great learning experience.

Junior Citizenship Scheme

Year 6 had an informative visit to Hargreaves Camp this week, where they completed the Junior Citizenship Scheme. This organised event, run by the Metropolitan Police gives Year 6 pupils an opportunity to learn how to keep safe. The workshops covered personal safety, transport safety and a range of other areas that is appropriate for transition to Year 7. The children behaved well and integrated brilliantly with Year 6 from Grove Primary.

Happy New year and welcome back to school. Our spring term has started with a splash as children from both year 6 classes went on a trip to Fairlop waters as part of our Kensukes Kingdom theme.

The children had a great time and enjoyed the experience, take a look at the picture above.

On Monday 1oth January the children will be going on a trip to Gamelan to experience some great learning and build upon their skills with music.

We are having a mince pie and tea afternoonon Tuesday 14th December for year 6 families, you should have recieved an invitation from your child regarding this event. Please complete and return the response slip if you wish to attend.

Our christmas party will be on Wednesday 15th December in the afternoon. Please send in some suitable food for the children to enjoy at the party, excluding any fizzy drinks. Please ensure that the food is easy to serve and arrives on the morning of the party.

Visit to Hainault Community Centre

The children will have the opportunity to find out information about World War 2 - listening to personal accounts of real life evacuees. We have been learning about mountains and mountain range across the world as part of our theme reach for the sky. We have been researching and creating a fact file about different mountain ranges and have been composing music using mountains and the work of Richard Wagner for inspiration.

This week we have been learning about biographies in literacy and focusing on the life of Ottobah Cugoano, The class have really shown an interest and produced excellent drama freeze frames focusing on different events from Ottobah's life. Look at the pictures.

The class have been learning and creating Kente patterns as part of our Art attack theme this week and have produced some excellent Kente patterns which we have used in a display.

The lists of children visiting the drama centre will be posted by Monday evening so keep a look out for this to ensure you have a packed lunch for the day you are going. Please also remember to complete the permission slips and return to class teachers.

hainault station

Over the last couple of weeks children from our class have visited Hainault Underground Station. The children really enjoyed the experience and were shown areas of the underground they didn't know existed, there was so much to learn and the children even got the opportunity to drive a train simulator.

Through our team building theme this term,the class have been learning how to work together to complete a challenge. Children had to work together using tyres to cross an imaginary swamp. Take a look at our pictures of the challenge.

Trip to Hainault Underground Station

Year 6 will be walking to Hainault Underground Station to learn about the operations and management - on the following dates:
Monday 13th September 2010 (15 children from 6C)
Monday 20th September 2010 (15 children from 6C)
Monday 27th September 2010 (15 children from 6O/L)
Monday 4th October 2010 (15 children from 6O/L)

They will be leaving the school at 09:30 and returning about 2:30 PM - so will need to bring a packed lunch. Families will be sent a text -to indicate which date your child will need a packed lunch.

Who needs Wimbledon to enjoy Strawberries and Cream? Y6 invited their families to enjoy an afternoon on picnic rugs/blankets, eating this delicious treat and sipping cool punch. It was great to see families interacting, chatting and enjoying each other's company. Thank you to the staff and pupils that worked hard to make this event a success.

Maths Games

Year 6 were set the task of finding out an area of maths that children around the school found difficult. They also had to research what made board games interesting and enthuse children to learn through play. They then planned and made a prototype, before presenting their idea in a Junior Apprenticeship style lesson. If PASSED the group then made their game and tested this with various classes around the school. They have recently evaluated the whole process. Well done Y6 - you have not only created some very detailed games to support learning but you have also worked very well in team planning.

Arts Week

What a week of activity! 6L are representing Ghana in the World Cup and so have enjoyed learning about life in Ghana. In the week we interviewed Josie and found out lots of interesting facts, applied our colour mixing skills to create a Ghanian sunset and learnt factual information from some short films. As well as this the class enjoyed learning some Salsa steps, took part in a CD recording -which is now on sale for £7.99 and competed in an exciting football tournamnet - well done to 6O/K for pipping us to the post! A very creative and exciting week.

Following weeks of learning and applying many skills, the Year 6 classes completed their course at Fairlop Waters. As tradition stands - at Fairlop Waters, many Year 6 children ended up in the water but all came out with huge wet smiles!!!

Well done to everybody that behaved well and showed their enthusiasm throughout the weeks. Congratulations in particular to Christopher, Rafquana, Dale and Amogh, who will be representing our school in the Sailing Regatta, next month.

Sailing and Canoeing

Year 6 had a fantastic start to their water sports adventure, at Fairlop Waters.
The children were divided into two groups, some choosing to participate in a course on sailing and the others in Canadian canoes. The children listened to the safety discussion and then eagerly began learning the parts of the boat. The 'canoe group' managed to get out on to the water, demonstrating good control. The sailing group learnt how to rig and de-rig their sails.
I'm looking forward to see how they all progress in the coming weeks.

Trip to The Gurdwara

On Wednesday 17th March Y6 visited the Gurdwara in Ilford. We all managed to fit in one bus and most of us sat there talking non-stop! Other children thought this was very annoying! We went there for a R.E lesson that I think everyone enjoyed.

As we reached the Gurdwara we were asked to stand on different sides. The women had to stand towards the left hand side and the boys had to stand to the right. Before we entered all of us had to cover our heads out of respect, then take off our shoes. Also both classes were asked to wash their hands before we were led upstairs to the praying area.

The organiser of this trip kindly told us about the Guru Granth Sahib which is the Holy book. He also told us a bit about the Sikh religion and all the Gurus.
In my opinion I think that everyone enjoyed it and they listened very well and I also think all the children have found it interesting to learn about a different culture to their own.

Trip to St Paul's Church

On Friday 22nd March Y6L/OK went to St Paul’s Church. We went so we could learn about Christianity in a fun and effective way. In the church we were welcomed by the organisers that took us to a DVD station. Here we were given instructions about what we were about to do. First we went to the red zone that talked about our ancestors. Then we went to the green zone that talked about Jesus’ miracles. Then we went to see a DVD. We had biscuits and we had a quiz. In my opinion we had a very fun learning experience.

Healthy Minds - Healthy Living!

Well done to Rebecca and Eleanor, who were a part of the winning team.

We launched our new creative project on 'healthy living' last week by attending the Junior Citizenship Scheme, organised by the Metropolitan Police.
Children took part in many different activities, which were designed to highlight the potential risks of crossing the road, using the underground, talking to strangers, mis-using the computer and many other areas. Everybody agreed that 'safety' must come first at all times. Well done Year 6 for being mature and able to learn and reflect on choices that will keep you safe.

To fit in with our recent creative theme on Movement, a teacher from a local secondary school led an energetic dance session. Y6 learnt how movement affects many different parts of the body and also learnt a choreographed dance routine. Well done to everybody who did well and particularly to Christopher, Praveen and Bernice who were praised for having super rhythm. Keep up the moves!

Year 6 were recently involved in the challenge of making various circuits. The first was to make a circuit that made a light bulb turn brighter/dimmer and then to make one with a switch, which would turn it on and off. Some children managed to make parallel circuits. They then learnt electrical symbols and drew their own circuit diagrams.

As our community focus, Year 6 organised a special afternoon, whereby they planned, organised and ran a tea/coffee/mince pie event for their families. It was a great afternoon. Everybody seemed to enjoy the home-made mince pies and the parents in particular, liked being waited on by their children.

During our creative theme on 'Materials' Y6 learned about mixing different primary colours, which produce a variation of shades and tones. These skills were then applied to our work on Clarice Cliff. We spent some time looking at various work produced by Cliff to gain an insight into the style and design. The final products were of an excellent standard.

The Year 6 had an opportunity to show their persuasive flair and sales-person techniques, when they entered a 'Dragon's Den' set-up. In groups of 4-6 the class had to sell their idea, in order to be granted £100, 000! Their mission was to work in a team to describe an effective way for pupils to communicate their feelings and issues in school. I particularly like the concept behind the 3 C's! and the MC ideas, although everybody had great thoughts. Keep your eyes open - these thrilling ideas may be coming to a school near you!

Our class proved that we could work together on Tuesday 12th September, when Rob and Neil visited us to teach us about teamwork. It was a great lesson, where the hall was turned into an acid swamp and we used the tyres to balance and support each other. In the end we worked in our groups to discuss what was good and what could be improved. I learnt that listening skills and giving eye contact to the person that is speaking is important.

Year 6 were very lucky to be visited by Tony from Redbridge Drama Centre. To consolidate our topic on World War II Britain, the session gave the class opportunties to reinact some of the main events during this time, particuarly focusing on evacuation. Many of the children absorbed themsleves in to this and were able to show empathy and understanding, through their thought-provoking performances.

Year 6 have had a DT project this half term to design and make a hat. In the first lesson they considered many different kinds of hats from the world, before making a plan. They then gathered materials together and began work on their creations.
As many realised - adjustments and changes had to be made along the way - just like in real life!

Year 6 Visit to The Redbridge Cycling Centre

To celebrate National Bike week 2009, pupils in Year 6 were kindly given tickets, from The Travel Team, to visit The Redbridge Cycling Centre.

This is the new 4.5 million state of the art cycling centre, which has been built as part of the 2012 Olympic legacy and is a brilliant venue for local cyclists.

The children were very well-behaved and enjoyed the experience.

Dance Workshop

We felt very lucky because we had the opportunity to get involved with a dance workshop. The visitors taught us a variety of 'Indian' dances. Some of the moves were complicated because they were very fast. However, the class seemed to enjoy learning this and had a great time. Thank you to the fantastic professional dancers that gave up their time to help us. We also enjoyed learning about some of the instruments, which they used.

Sailing at Fairlop Waters - Week 1

Year 6 had a fantastic opportunity last week when they began their course in sailing. Over the next few weeks the children will give you a flavour of their experiences.

What a great time! We were taught about safety on the water by a man called Phil. After this we began learning about parts of the boat, like the rudder,which controls and steers the boat. Ashish, who was in my group, needed help with the steering but we all did well in the end. I am really looking forward to imporving my skills.
My rating for this week's session is 10/10 - brilliant!

In ICT Year 6 have been using the 'Lego Mindstom' package called 'Robolab'. This helps children learn how to create, test, improve and refine sequences of instructions to make things happen and to monitor events and respond to them.

Robolab presents a structured approach to programming by arranging a sequence of icons, with templates to guide the beginner. The RCX enables remote control, away from the computer.

6L have enjoyed this programming experience and in this ever-changing technological world have realised that things will only do what you want them to do - if you program them properly first!

Red Nose Day

On 'Red Nose Day' children and staff at John Bramston decided to wear their pyjamas to raise money for charity. From nursery age to Year 6, many dressed up and donated £1.00. Schools around the country helped raise more than 1 million pounds. Comic Relief helps places like Africa with things like mosquito nets. It is true that many children die from malaria on a daily basis - so we can all feel good that we helped towards this.

Book Week at JB

I'm sure that everybody at John Bramston Primary School would agree - What a great week! Children and staff around the school took part in various activites, covering a range of subject areas. Some Pupils in 6L have written about some of their highlights.

John Bramston celebrated World Book Day in style. The children dressed up as their favourite book character. Very colourful costumes were made and many stylish and beautiful clothes were worn. Staff even dressed up as their favourite characters.

On Thursday 4th March, two storytellers came to John Bramston Primary School. First of all they did lots of activities about emotions. We were asked to think of lots of words that make us feel happy, sad etc. Then they moved on to the story, which was the fun bit! One of them used a guitar to add suspense to the scary bits and this made it really lively. During the actual story-telling they used some of the teachers, who played the evil characters! We all enjoyed it very much.

Arts Week in Year 6

During our Arts Week we produced some Kente Designs. We learnt about these famous Ghanian patterns, during Black History Week. The class enjoyed looking at various Kente patterns, sketching their own ideas and finally using fabric paints to make prints. Well done Year 6.

The scheme is run by the Metropolitan Police and is designed to make Year 6 children more aware of safety issues such as robbery, drug paraphernalia, road and fire safety. Other issues such as truancy, first aid, recyling and knife crime were also covered.

Both classes mixed with other children from local primary schools behaved exceptionally well and were enthusiatsic and motivated throughout the session.

Well done Year 6.

The classes were mixed with other schools and completed 12 different safety workshops. They were given marks out of 10 for each scenario presented, in terms of how they dealt with each one.

Take 10 - Cup Stacking!

Research from the World Sport Stacking Association has suggested that short practical activites, such as cup-stacking, gives children an opportunity to regain focus and energy - which is sometimes needed at 2.30 in the afternoon!

Through activities like this, children use parts of their brain that are often less active and have to apply quick thinking skills. Following these short bursts of activites, it is claimed that children's attention is boosted. We've enjoyed trialing this in the school and have had lots of fun.

Useful tips are to start slow and take your time to learn each step. Once mastering the basic steps then you can speed it up. We've been practising The 3-3-3 Stack. Everybody is doing really well and we already have a few children that are 3 stacking almost 1 a second. You never know - we may have a World Champion in our sights. Keep it up!

Snowy Day Competition

Thinking about suspense!

Year 6 are in the middle of the suspense narrative unit, in literacy. We have been using drama and discussion to learn about the features of suspense writing. We also looked at various stories, highlighting in them, where the author used these features effectively. After writing some sentence starters we then produced a paragraph, which conveys the suspense. Year 6 are all doing very well and showing their creative flair - Here is a good example.

The leaves rustled. Branches swayed. Who's there? Suddenly, footsteps
got closer and sounded louder. Trees towered over me. I heard their piercing sound. They were now running towards me. Immediately I turned. Silence. A dark shadow slipped, as quickly as a mouse, into the dark, moulding leaves. Someone or something was watching me...

We knew that sugar dissolved, when mixed with water, but wanted to test whether the size of the granule made a difference, as to how quickly it dissolved. To test this we used 3 types of sugar. (Granulated/demerara/caster)

A Special Visitor

Year 6 had a very interesting and informative history lesson last week, where they had an opportunity to interview Mr Legon, who was an evacuee, in the Second World War. Our visitor was very inspiring, as he described his experiences. This enabled the class to get a clear idea about what life was like then.

Night Poem

The class have produced some very imaginative personification poems. After reading some of them, they sent a chill down my back! They have really imagined what night would be like as a person. Here is a sample.

NIGHT

Night is a dark disguised creature,
Hidden by his billowing cape.
He cuts you with a chilling glare
Pulverizing all the light.

His clothes are made of dirty rags,
Dull eyes with a penetrating stare.
Face is sinister and boney,
And has hair as red as revenge.

Night takes away the clement weather,
Replacing it with raging storms.
When day comes Night has to retreat,
Running to someone else to haunt.

He moves at an amazing velocity,
But always creeps up from behind.
He takes refugee in victim’s homes,
And takes away all hope …

Our topic for the next term is learning about life in Britain, during World War II. During today's lesson the children worked in groups and shared their thoughts and ideas about this era. We are all looking forward to find out more over the next few weeks.

Personification

One of my favourite aspects of poetry. The children were fully engaged and enjoyed looking at a number of different poems, finding various examples of personification. Look out for our poems, which we will blog soon.
